Metatagging is a portmanteau of the terms 'Metadata' and 'Tagging'. The latter is generally considered a colloquial euphemism for cataloguing assets. The expression is more typically used by newcomers to Digital Asset Management to refer to the process of applying metadata to assets during the cataloguing stage of asset ingestion.
Despite not having any formal basis, it is widely understood as a shorthand description by both DAM users and system developers.
